So, first of all, let me share stuff I found:

1 - How to get access to the media player's partitions from the PC (either connected via LAN or Wi-Fi) and how to install add-ons by Thierry (I've tried this and let me say it works beautifully!)

2 - Other Add-ons (and how to allow writing to NTFS partition, even with the disk off) compiled by Freddy (didn't try all of these, but at least enable writing to NTFS works fine!)

Secondly, here's the 2 things which I'm now needing:

A - Install a torrent client on the media player that has a web interface (ideally) or at least a PC interface that would enable me to turn off my PC and leave the media player downloading my torrents.
Initially I thought the solution was with the Transcode Server application that brings a "BitTorrent Agent" application. However, I couldn't get that to work on any of my PC's (Windows 7 and XP).
If anyone knows how to get it to work, please say something!
I've also learned here on the 7th paragraph that it's possible to install software on the writeable partitions and start the software from the PC, however I didn't manage to find anything on this forum or the "friends" fora!

B - Get the player to read MKV's!
Supposedly the transcode server should get that done, but does anyone know how it can be done?
Because I couldn't get that to work!
And does anyone know of another way of doing this without this Transcode Server application?

I've searched a lot here and on the web, before posting and couldn't find anything helpful.

Just so you guys can help me better, right now I can access my media player's partitions (FAT32 (Hdd1) and NTFS (Hdd2)) and write to them as I please through Wi-Fi; I can also access all of the HDD partitions via Linux if needed (I've a distro of it installed on my PC and it mounts all the drives when connected via USB).

RealTek Transcode Server has failed to install on both XP and Vista from the supplied disc, so I downloaded v1.14 from your Downloads page. That version had the same problem: disc1.cab is corrupt or missing. However, the Samba and BitTorrent services appear to work on the media player, although installation didn't go quite to plan.

I can't see anything that tells us which chipset is in it, but then neither of us knows much about Linux although we can follow clear instructions.

I got 1 of these device and it seems it is very similar to the other devices in the website. I have been trying things on it on the last few days and found some useful information out of it. It already has Samba and bittorent support (BT support was very basic and shitty IMHO)

I have a RTD1261 based mediaplayer and I want to know how I can do this :
- at start-up, I want that the mediaplayer (DvdPlayer) to play automatically a playlist.
- it should be cool if the playlist loop again and again.

On my mediaplayer, the telnet access is OK and I can download an external playlist with a wget command.

What are the solution to automatically play the playlist without using the remote control ?

Only the /tmp directory is writable. How do I get more information about this box using linux commands.

The device does not come with any HDD but accepts SATA HDD. I did not install any HDD yet but connected a USB HDD to it to play and also record files.

Before I tweak the device, I need to confirm if they will work.

i want to change the size of the partitions used in a Emtec MovieCube R700 for a friend.
but i dont want to do anything wrong and delete the OS.

i want to reduce the partition used for TV-recordings to 50GB instead of 250GB.

The remaining 200GB should be merged with Partition (D:) or (E:)

i guess that the Drive on the left is used for TV recordings, and D and E are used for normal Xvid Movies.

I have tried mount -o remount,rw / but no sucess. Every time I try to delete the file over the networked file viewer it tells me access is denyed. Is there a really simple way just to delete this tile through the telnet access?

I ask this question as then going into the playback of things I have recorded, my box crashes, it wont let me delete files or review recordings. I beleive the file is corrupted and I need to start again. I dont want to have to format the HDD again as I have a number of very large recording on the NFTS partition.

I've found on thw web other firmware almost compatible
like the verbatim Mediastation or the Avmedia MP7220

All the other firmwares that I've found are in a different format

all the ellion/emtec firmware are in a compressed file
named "install.flash.img"

The firmware for the system I'm working on must be
"install.img" in tar format that must contains some .bin
and a configuration.xml file.

After some investigation, without support from the producer,
I found the solution following some other forums.

I was able to restore the firmware extracting a copy from a
working device (thank you Gregor!) and reconstructing the
install image file.

i just bought an emtec movie cube r100 and put a 500gb hdd in it. i downloaded the firmware v2.0.9 and have followed all the instructions but everytime it says movie cube not found.
it is recognising it as a mass storage device but nothing else.

But when accessing these shares from ET-1720 i do following

• choose "Network"
• choose my workgroup
• login takes long, but thats ok
• choose a share, this task takes extremely long, over 2 minutes. this is very annoying
• Once inside the share, navigating directories is find and playing movies is also very fast

Just displaying a share the first time and it takes ages. Does anybody see this problem before.

Could it be helpful/is it possible to install the firmware from another vendor ? e.g. EMTEC, or Moviecube ?

I have bought a Hyundai Light HMB-L110 box. It is with Realtek Venus chip. I followed all instructions and has succeed to chroot on a different system with a gcc compiller. The question is - do someone know where can I be able to find a stream player (like mplayer), which can play a direct mpeg2/4 ot h264 stream. This device can only play shared data like movies and mp3s.

i own a OEM version of a player running the rtd1073 it's also running the 2.6.12 venus kernel.
it does not has an official firmware so flashing it is unsafe. luckily i have successfully cross compiled kernel modules for
the stock kernel I can now connect a webcam to the box.
my goal is to run opencv on the box, but first i need to get x11 or xorg running on the box and it seems
i am no where close to that. i am wishing that someone can already run xorg on the box already and pass us
the information on how.

1) Would the described methods for changing/enhancing the firmware work on a K120 as well ?

2) Can i use a WLAN USB Stick with the cube to get it into my network?

Have tried the 2.1 and 2.08 firmware but on running they find the unit fine but on the install, when it asks about space allocations for the recording partitions and media partitions it has incorrect negative info which is put into the part.txt file. Tried to update these with both percentages and byte allocations etc and have tried USB installs with a number of options.

it either just stalls on the install or comes up with a 'install error, reboot required' and never completes.

Even tried running pc install, update part.txt file and allocated/formated the fat32 & NTFS partitions etc and seemed to get further along but then again failed.

Has anyone got a large disk such as this working and any tweaking required?

Settings things at Startup

It seems that this device has a read-only root filesystem. I was not successful in Trying to mount it as read/write however I did find a few things:

The files in /usr/local/etc will persist across reboots.

/usr/local/etc/rcS is a startup script that can be edited. I changed mine to have this as the last line:

/usr/local/etc/startup &

This will run a new script in the background so it cannot stop the rcS script from finishing. This is a safety measure in case I add something the prevents the unit from finishing a boot or restarting.

My /usr/local/etc/startup script currently looks like this:

#sleep two minutes so I have time to log in and edit or delete this file if it causes problems on boot.

mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb
mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/public
mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/pubreadwrite

This makes it so my SMB shares are always mounted and accessible on the same path has my drive.

Web Server

The web server HTML and CGI scripts posted here seem to work but they disappear on a reboot. I might keep the files elsewhere and soft link /tmp/www on startup or maybe copy the files on startup. (I might also take a crack at translating them to English :-) )

That's all I have found for now since I've only had the device for 1 day. I have not tried the chroot environment yet but it looks interesting.

It seems that the NTFS partition is read only. What if I unmount the NTFS partion, make a fat32 partion on it and remount?

It looks like the mkdosfs command can do this.

Disregard. The device allows you to dedicate 100% of disk to fat32. Of course you are then limited to <4GB files but I can deal with that.

Here's a neat trick: you can send commands to the device using telnet on another linux machine line this:

1. This will output the time on the media player

(echo root; sleep 2 ; echo date ; sleep 2)| telnet 192.168.x.x

This thing uses a weird MAC address. 00:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF

I'm thinking that this must be set in software and is probably the same address on every unit. That means you gotta separate these things via a IP gateway if you expect to use more than one at home. Two of them probably won't work on the same broadcast domain.

I have tried to change the MAC address using the "ifconfig hw ether" command but it doesn't seem to work.

So far I have seen that my Abigs D5 is very similar to Official Emtec firmware, just more outdated.
It runs on a 200Mhz MIPS 4KEc version 6.4 and has 64mb ram. The OS is 2.6.12.6-VENUS Linux kernel and it has uClibc-0.9.28.

What I'm mostly interested in is the RootApp and DvdPlayer applications that come with other firmwares, because mine has a few limitations and I would like to see if the other ones work.

Also if you know of any other applications that could be useful please let me know.

While setting it up as a Samba Server i get an Errorfor this command:
mv ME1_init_deb.sh /usr/local/etc/

It says:

In some forums i read, that after a crash (and I had one) there is automatically read-only access.

I've been asked to look at developing new s/w for a brand new rtd1262-based box (no brand names!) and have been looking at it for a few weeks now. Finally starting to gain a bit of traction.

After looking at the "install" procedure, I'm now concentrating on the Realtek "BIOS" to see how to dump in a new linux kernel, and maybe a jffs2 root instead of the squashfs non-writable thing that's in there now.

And after that little job I'll have to start seriously looking at decrypting key parts of the DvdPlayer app. With 2.6 million lines of MIPS assembler, I'm calling on AI help to sort out what was part of the C library or other "uninteresting" stuff (since the thing was statically linked and then had all symbols and debug stuff removed), and what actually makes the thing go.

So far the "strings" extracted show quite a bit is done using the old Linux standby of calls to system("…"). :)

VSFTP is way faster than the FTP already found here, so well worth checking out. I did SSH at the request of somebody else. It works well as a telnet replacement, but is much slower for file transfer.

I own a Emtec Movie Cube R700 and I would like to know any way to view HD movies. I've downloaded few movies on MKV format, but the firmware doesn't play it. I've tried to change it to .avi files but the codecs didn't change (codecs AVC or HDsomenumbers) so I can't still play it. Do you got any clues about what can I do?

After searching for a firmware for my old Movie Cube R 500Gb (HW model: RTD 1261, older from 2007) and not found it on emtec website, I've seen that the updated firmware 2.0.9up for R100 model is compatible and it works like a charm. So, I've updated the Movie Cube.

After that, I've seen this web to do some useful "things" to this toy.

The first think that I've tried to do is to change the predefined desktop but without success. This are my steps:

1. telnet with PuTTy and root acces. This is ok. I've see the mounted partitions and folders.
2. access to /usr/local/bin/Resources and edit with vi "swconfig.ini" file
3. change with vi "sustom_id = 1" parameter to 2, 3 or 6 ("sustom_id = 6", for example)
4. exit Putty.
5. turn off movie cube.

After this "little" change, I can not do ANYTHING with movie cube. It gets hanged (turns on but no Guide menu nor other options; also the "blue LEDs" are always on). The only thing to recover it is re-installing again the firmware 2.0.9up (no Wired LAN access with telnet either).

Any suggestion of what I am doing wrong?

in sum, there are appr. 25.000 files.

By comparing user manuals, it uses identical firmware as the Emperex ME1. I cannot find a firmware version, as hitting display twice (as you do with the me1) is disabled. I tried updating it using the new me1 firmware, and it seems to go through the process fine, but in the end it restarts and is back to the same firmware. The directory structure appears to be the same as me1, right down to the "A simple html+cgi example" web site. All software is installed to firmware, nothing is stored on the hard drive. BusyBox is v1.1.3 (2007.12.17-06:34+0000).

I'm looking for information that might help me to update or modify this thing, as the firmware suffers all the problems as the earlier me1. I'd also like to offer any information I can to anyone interested in this piece of hardware.

PS: Emails to Dayfly Tech regarding firmware updates have gone unanswered.

Today, I tried to watch the movie I recorded yesterday and the movie list was empty.
I cannot record, if I press the record button, the screen goe black and then it goes back to the menu page. I think I have a problem with the partitions where data aer recorded, because I can still read the movies on the fat 16 partition.
Can you please help me?
What can I do, are my movies lost? Is it possible to reset and recreate this partition?
