Why do you want to change the firmware? The findings in this wiki most are made with the Emtec R100. This has no HDMI so you can't use our firmware. Your may be compatible with an other Emtec or an Ellion - you have to research.
If you don't have the original firmware as a file, there is The risk, that you have no way back if it does not work right.

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: plextor mx1000l firmware update

Hello,
A year ago I bought a plextor mediax 1000l. ([http://www.plextor-europe.com/products/plextor_mediax/px-mx1000l.html]) In the manual plextor said that firmware update could come. However 1 year later there are still no updates.(I even wrote a mail to plextor 2 weeks ago about this and they didn't even answer.) The plextor mx1000l is also a realtek rtd1261.
Is it possible to use the emtec firmware update on the plextor? and are there risks involved in updating the firmware?

With kind regards

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: plextor mx1000l firmware update

Despite any firmware upgrade, my HMC3901 is too slow when talking about sending files through the lan connection. i'm actually testing and it goes 160kbps (around 2Mbits per second) through a 30m cat5 cable. Does anybody knows if this can be fixed to work faster (it is supposed to be 10/100mbps)? does anybody gets faster speeds?

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: HMC 3901 network too slow

I want to use my KM-31BK to convert my VHS collection to digital and was bitten by the device seeing Macrovision on some tapes and putting "Copy Protected" on the screen and refusing to record. I found the following advice for a Media Cube on emtech.mhdworld.com:

maxonthecube wrote:
What you can do is to put the following in a file on the Cube, say
/usr/local/etc/dvdplayer_commands.txt:

C
copyfree 1
quit

Then, edit the file /usr/local/etc/rcS and change the following lines:
./RootApp DvdPlayer&
to:
cat /usr/local/etc/dvdplayer_commands.txt | ./RootApp DvdPlayer&
and:
./DvdPlayer&
to:
cat /usr/local/etc/dvdplayer_commands.txt | ./DvdPlayer&

Reboot the MC using the 'reboot' command and you should be done.

I'm still performing some tests, but I am pretty confident this is the
trick I was looking for to backup those old jammed VHS tapes. Up to now, it
is working flawlessly!

This worked exactly as described on my Kingwin as well and appears to have successfully disabled the malfeature.

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: Compatible Device Kingwin KM-31BK Findings

Hi, got a HMC-3901 with 2.1 firmware and am seeking to do an upgrade from a 500gb to a seagate 1.5tb but am getting errors.

Have tried the 2.1 and 2.08 firmware but on running they find the unit fine but on the install, when it asks about space allocations for the recording partitions and media partitions it has incorrect negative info which is put into the part.txt file. Tried to update these with both percentages and byte allocations etc and have tried USB installs with a number of options.

it either just stalls on the install or comes up with a 'install error, reboot required' and never completes.

Even tried running pc install, update part.txt file and allocated/formated the fat32 & NTFS partitions etc and seemed to get further along but then again failed.

Has anyone got a large disk such as this working and any tweaking required?

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Support for Large drives

I wanted to start a thread specific to this device so I can post my findings and hopefully encourage others to do the same:

Partitions

For some reason this devices insists on creating both a Fat32 and NTFS partition. I'm not sure why.

telnet to the box and log in as root with no password

Settings things at Startup

It seems that this device has a read-only root filesystem. I was not successful in Trying to mount it as read/write however I did find a few things:

The files in /usr/local/etc will persist across reboots.

/usr/local/etc/rcS is a startup script that can be edited. I changed mine to have this as the last line:

/usr/local/etc/startup &

This will run a new script in the background so it cannot stop the rcS script from finishing. This is a safety measure in case I add something the prevents the unit from finishing a boot or restarting.

My /usr/local/etc/startup script currently looks like this:

#sleep two minutes so I have time to log in and edit or delete this file if it causes problems on boot.
sleep 120
mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb
mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/public
mkdir /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/pubreadwrite
#run mount in background in case it hangs
mount //192.168.x.x/public /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/public -t cifs -o username=Realtek_guest &
#seems to not like two mount commands running at the same time.
sleep 5
mount //192.168.x.x/pubreadwrite /tmp/hdd/volumes/smb/pubreadwrite -t cifs -o username=Realtek_guest &

This makes it so my SMB shares are always mounted and accessible on the same path has my drive.

Web Server

The web server HTML and CGI scripts posted here seem to work but they disappear on a reboot. I might keep the files elsewhere and soft link /tmp/www on startup or maybe copy the files on startup. (I might also take a crack at translating them to English :-) )

That's all I have found for now since I've only had the device for 1 day. I have not tried the chroot environment yet but it looks interesting.

It seems that the NTFS partition is read only. What if I unmount the NTFS partion, make a fat32 partion on it and remount?

It looks like the mkdosfs command can do this.

Has anyone tried this?

Disregard. The device allows you to dedicate 100% of disk to fat32. Of course you are then limited to <4GB files but I can deal with that.

Here's a neat trick: you can send commands to the device using telnet on another linux machine line this:

This will output the time on the media player

(echo root; sleep 2 ; echo date ; sleep 2)| telnet 192.168.x.x

This thing uses a weird MAC address. 00:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF

I'm thinking that this must be set in software and is probably the same address on every unit. That means you gotta separate these things via a IP gateway if you expect to use more than one at home. Two of them probably won't work on the same broadcast domain.

I have tried to change the MAC address using the "ifconfig hw ether" command but it doesn't seem to work.

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: Compatible Device Kingwin KM-31BK Findings

I'm new to working with RTD1261, but I'm eager to learn. I've 11 years of experience of using Linux and as a programmer.
What I'm looking for is some basic information on what I can do with my Abigs D5. Which libraries do you recommend, what cross-compiler do you recommend, and what changes do you recommend, etc.
Are there some programming projects that you think I should look at?

So far I have seen that my Abigs D5 is very similar to Official Emtec firmware, just more outdated.
It runs on a 200Mhz MIPS 4KEc version 6.4 and has 64mb ram. The OS is 2.6.12.6-VENUS Linux kernel and it has uClibc-0.9.28.

Forum category: Developpers / Alternative Firmware
Forum thread: Custom changes to firmware

We look on the board and compare specifications or firmware with the Emtec R100 - the one we started with this wiki.
Yours has the firmware in flashmemory and not on a linuxpartition on hdd, therefor your can't modify the system directly.
so i sent the unit back twice to the place i bought it from and they have said it is repaired twice. I am still getting the exact same message as i always have with it, pvr box not installed. I beleive that it is something that i need to do. When the hard drive is installed in the media player, i can connect the unit to the computer and the computer recognizes it, i can then use disk management to partition the dive and format and remove the partition if i want to. However without doing all of that first. Once i plug the unit into the computer and run the firmware update it still says that pvr box not found. Also when i plug the unit into the tv, a black and white screen bounces up and down saying media box. I assume that it is in PAL but when i hit the tv system button nothing changes.

I am at a lose, i have disabled the card readers in the computer as well when i try to update. This is two years in the making and still no luck, the place that outsources the units are in china and are very little help truthfully. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Firmware install hmc 3902

Hmm ok, maybe I thought way too complicated but on the Internet I read Windows greater 2k could only work with encrypted passwords on smb shares. So I didn't even try unencrypted samba passwords and tried the hard way with a seperate password file where you put NTLM Hashes. But the Samba implementation of busybox seems not to support that.

Forum category: Website / Discussion
Forum thread: Password on NAS folder

Maybe I've bitten off more than I can chew. But I'm always doing that and have lived to tell many tales. So I proceed. :)

I've been asked to look at developing new s/w for a brand new rtd1262-based box (no brand names!) and have been looking at it for a few weeks now. Finally starting to gain a bit of traction.

After looking at the "install" procedure, I'm now concentrating on the Realtek "BIOS" to see how to dump in a new linux kernel, and maybe a jffs2 root instead of the squashfs non-writable thing that's in there now.

And after that little job I'll have to start seriously looking at decrypting key parts of the DvdPlayer app. With 2.6 million lines of MIPS assembler, I'm calling on AI help to sort out what was part of the C library or other "uninteresting" stuff (since the thing was statically linked and then had all symbols and debug stuff removed), and what actually makes the thing go.

So far the "strings" extracted show quite a bit is done using the old Linux standby of calls to system("…"). :)

If anyone is playing with or interested in a similar box, feel free to contact me either here or on the email.

Forum category: Developpers / Alternative Firmware
Forum thread: hacking 1262

I've just started hacking a 1262 based on the same sources.

So far the only thing of any use is the linux code. It has the "venus" drivers for the vid/audio codecs (+ a few other housekeeping things).

The first step is to try to compile it. My first attempt with a v4 GNU gcc brought up lots of errors. When these were fixed, the result was bigger than the space in the /dev/mtdblock/0 would allow.

So I went back to gcc 3.4.4 (mipsel-linux, of course). It ended up smaller than the linux already in the flash. But I noticed the default .config makes all the dvb code modules instead of builtins. So I checked "y" instead of "m" for all that stuff and recompiled.

Now the resulting linux is only 10% smaller than the flash version. I don't know why the diff now. A comparison of all the extracted strings from the new linux and the old one shows almost all the code is now in there. But I'm taking my time before I try to blow the flash with the new linux.

I also managed to locate the Realtek BIOS up in /dev/mtdblock/4. You need to activate the serial console (on the left-hand 4-pin connector) before this makes sense. Type 2 carriage returns after powerup and you're in something that behaves a bit like U-Boot, but itsn't quite as clean. :)

It's been suggested I blow away the existing linux and root (write-protected squashfs) and put in a uboot, linux and root. But I don't think it's going to be so easy.

Forum category: Developpers / Alternative Firmware
Forum thread: GPL source code_realtek chipset 2009-02-11

I have recently added instructions for adding SSH and FTP (using VSFTP instead of the FTP found here) to my blog at http://consumerelectronicshacker.blogspot.com and I wanted to share it here because I believe it will work more devices than just the ScreenPlay. The script to do the install will probably NOT work on other devices because it depends on the hard drive to be mounted at specific locations. But I've added enough comments in the script to indicate what is happening that anybody should be able to manually install.

VSFTP is way faster than the FTP already found here, so well worth checking out. I did SSH at the request of somebody else. It works well as a telnet replacement, but is much slower for file transfer.

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: SSH and FTP

Hi guys, well first of all I would clarify that I don't speak english very well so I'll try to do my best while writing this, ok, let's see.

I own a Emtec Movie Cube R700 and I would like to know any way to view HD movies. I've downloaded few movies on MKV format, but the firmware doesn't play it. I've tried to change it to .avi files but the codecs didn't change (codecs AVC or HDsomenumbers) so I can't still play it. Do you got any clues about what can I do?

Thank you so much!

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: [Need help] How to play HD movies?

I have version 2.1.0 installed, in older versions I had changed the menu with no problems.
If you do the samba tweak for root, you can edit the "swconfig.ini" without using vi.
May be, your "swconfig.ini" is not set executable.

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Movie Cube R 500Gb & predefined desktop

Hi r-p-r, thanks for the fast response. I've done the steps on the link indicated.

I am sure that I am using the 'wq' parameter (without quotes) and the file is writed to Resource folder. After that, again open .ini file with vi and I see the change done.

Then, turn off EMTEC, and after that, wait 10-15secs, I turn on and the Movie Cube picture appears (bootscreen picture) and the blue leds are "fixed" and nothing happens (no Guide, no setup, etc… also no Net).

I've seen another guy in the MHDWorld forums having a blackscreen issue and it's the same like mine. Maybe 2.0.9up changes something more or maybe my 2007 Movie Cube R 500Gb does not leave make this thing.

Also, to know, 2.0.9up has Samba by default. I can edit smb.conf on /usr/lib directly and my windows lists the Net resources. :D (no reboot of Movie Cube needed).

EDIT:

To know, before 2.0.9up I had 0.9.14 firmware. I don't know if it is needed to apply another firmware previous to go up directly with 2.0.9up.

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Movie Cube R 500Gb & predefined desktop

Perhaps you did not save the changes in vi.
Follow all steps here or do it on windows and copy "swconfig.ini" to the FAT and use the copy command as described for the tweak for changing bootpic.

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Movie Cube R 500Gb & predefined desktop

Hi,

After searching for a firmware for my old Movie Cube R 500Gb (HW model: RTD 1261, older from 2007) and not found it on emtec website, I've seen that the updated firmware 2.0.9up for R100 model is compatible and it works like a charm. So, I've updated the Movie Cube.

After that, I've seen this web to do some useful "things" to this toy.

The first think that I've tried to do is to change the predefined desktop but without success. This are my steps:

1. telnet with PuTTy and root acces. This is ok. I've see the mounted partitions and folders.
2. access to /usr/local/bin/Resources and edit with vi "swconfig.ini" file
3. change with vi "sustom_id = 1" parameter to 2, 3 or 6 ("sustom_id = 6", for example)
4. exit Putty.
5. turn off movie cube.

After this "little" change, I can not do ANYTHING with movie cube. It gets hanged (turns on but no Guide menu nor other options; also the "blue LEDs" are always on). The only thing to recover it is re-installing again the firmware 2.0.9up (no Wired LAN access with telnet either).

Any suggestion of what I am doing wrong?

Regards.

PD: Good work with so useful discussion!!!

Forum category: Developpers / Official Firmware
Forum thread: Movie Cube R 500Gb & predefined desktop
